Motorway Breakdown Safety: Essential Tips for M-1 and M-2 Drivers

1. The High Risks of Motorway Breakdowns

The M-1 (Islamabad-Peshawar) and M-2 (Islamabad-Lahore) motorways are state-of-the-art transit networks, but the high speeds of traveling vehicles—often exceeding 120 km/h—make roadside breakdowns exceptionally dangerous. A stationary vehicle on a high-speed motorway is highly vulnerable to catastrophic rear-end collisions if oncoming drivers are distracted or fatigued.

If your vehicle starts losing power, experiences a sudden blowout, or starts showing dashboard warning lights, do not panic. Your immediate focus must be to exit the active travel lanes safely. Use your remaining momentum to guide the vehicle onto the hard shoulder on the far left of the motorway, parking as far away from the white traffic line as possible.

2. Crucial Immediate On-Scene Safety Actions

Once parked on the shoulder, immediately turn your front wheels toward the safety barrier (away from the road) and engage your handbrake. Turn on your hazard warning lights and keep your side parking lights active, especially at night or during foggy weather. This visual signal is crucial for alerting oncoming high-speed traffic from a distance.

Instruct all passengers to exit the vehicle from the left doors (facing away from the road). Never sit inside a broken-down vehicle on a motorway shoulder, as secondary collisions are frequent and violent. Move everyone quickly over the safety guardrail and stand on the grassy embankment. Put on a high-visibility reflective safety vest if you have one, and place your reflective warning triangle at least 150 meters behind your car.

3. Contacting Official Help and Professional Towing

Once everyone is in a safe location, call the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) emergency helpline at 130. Inform them of your exact location, which can be identified by the kilometer markers placed along the center divider or shoulder. The motorway police will dispatch a patrol unit to position behind you with high-visibility emergency lights.

Simultaneously, contact a professional, motorway-authorized towing service like Insaf Car Towing. Motorway towing requires heavy-duty flatbeds and highly stable transport equipment capable of securely hauling vehicles over long highway distances at sustained speeds. We provide rapid dispatch to motorway interchanges, ensuring your car is recovered and transported safely.

4. Preparing Your Vehicle for Long Highway Journeys

Many motorway breakdowns are entirely preventable with simple pre-trip checks. Before embarking on a long drive on the M-1 or M-2, check your tyre tread depth, tire pressure (high-speed runs heat up tyres, causing weak tyres to burst), engine oil, and coolant levels. Make sure your radiator is clean and your fan is functioning perfectly, as the Salt Range incline on the M-2 regularly causes engines to overheat.

Keep an emergency roadside kit in your boot containing a functional spare tyre, jack, wheel brace, tow hook, water bottle, warning triangle, torch, and our emergency contact number. Having these items ready, combined with knowing the safety protocols, ensures you can navigate any motorway breakdown safely and efficiently.
