Important Rules and Best Practices for Towing Electric Vehicles (EVs)
1. Why EV Towing Demands Unique Care
Electric Vehicles (EVs)—including models from Tesla, Audi, Porsche, Hyundai, and Chinese brands like BYD—are fundamentally different from traditional internal combustion engine cars. They do not feature a mechanical transmission or a true 'neutral' gear that physically detaches the electric drive motors from the drive wheels.
When an EV is pushed or dragged, the wheels are directly connected to the electric motor rotors. Spinning the wheels rotates the motors, which immediately generates electric current via electromagnetic induction. If the vehicle's electronic systems are powered off, this electricity has nowhere to go, posing severe risks to the high-voltage electrical architecture.
2. The Danger of Regenerative Braking and Overheating
Dragging an EV with its wheels on the ground—even for a short distance or at low speed—forces its electric motors into a state similar to intense regenerative braking. Because there is no active cooling system running to manage the heat generated in the motor windings and inverter, the temperature spikes rapidly.
This extreme thermal stress can melt internal insulation, blow high-voltage fuses, and permanently damage the inverter or the main lithium-ion battery pack. Tying down an EV axle and dragging it like a conventional front-wheel-drive car can result in total electrical system failure, requiring a complete, incredibly expensive motor or battery replacement.
3. Mandatory Flatbed Transport and 'Transport Mode'
To safeguard the high-voltage components, EV manufacturers strictly dictate that electric vehicles must only be transported on flatbed tow trucks with all four wheels loaded securely onto the platform. If a flatbed is unavailable and the vehicle must be moved using a wheel-lift, operators must use specialized towing dollies under the rolling wheels to prevent them from spinning.
Before winch-loading an EV onto a flatbed, it must be put into its official 'Transport Mode' or 'Tow Mode' via the touchscreen settings. This electronic setting releases the automatic parking brakes and keeps the vehicle in a temporary free-roll state. If the EV is completely dead and the screen is unresponsive, operators must utilize specialized wheel skates or jumper-power setups to unlock the parking brakes safely.
4. Insaf's Advanced EV Transport Expertise
At Insaf Car Towing, we are at the forefront of modern transport technology. Our operators are fully trained and certified in EV recovery protocols, specifically for Tesla, Audi e-tron, BYD, and other modern electric platforms. We understand how to access emergency jump-points to release electronic parking brakes safely.
We strictly enforce a 'Flatbed-Only' policy for all electric vehicles, using premium, non-abrasive over-the-tire soft straps to secure the vehicle without putting stress on the battery pack undercarriage. When you trust us with your EV, you are partnering with trained experts who understand the delicate physics and high-voltage safety rules of your vehicle.
